Arrival
So now that you know how to get to your new home at Jones, here’s
a little taste of what your day will be like when you arrive on Sunday,
August 14, 2005....
Move in times will be organized by your last name.
If your last name begins with the letters A-H you should
arrive at 8 a.m., I-Q at 9 a.m., and R-Z at 10 a.m.
(We have to shifts to move in because of space limitations.) You will be
able to unload and then park your vehicle, but we will send you more
instructions about this later in the summer. When you arrive, your overanxious
advisors will clamor to see if you are one of their lucky few. These
crazy kids will greet you like they’ve been waiting their entire live to meet
you. They will then take you to the Jones Master’s house, to meet the
Masters and O-Week coordinators (who will also be extremely excited to
meet you!) There you will get your t-shirts, keys, and have your picture
taken by our Historian. After that, your advisors will take you to your
room where you can unpack for a little while. Then at 11:30 come down
with your family for lunch.

Schedule of Day One
11:30 am - Lunch in the commons with families and advisors. There will be good food and entertainment provided by
some of the advisors making complete fools of themselves.
1:00 pm - New students say goodbye to their families. Families go to the Rice Memorial Center for the New Families
Orientation, while students divide up into their O-Week groups. Say goodbye to your families now, since you will not
see them again. (Parents need to say goodbye and leave at this time. They are not allowed back at Jones during OWeek,
and must leave campus by 6pm after the New Families' Orientation.)
5:00 pm – Start of Term Feast at Jones
7:00 pm – Matriculation in the Shepard Building. Bring a
nice outfit for this.
10:00 pm - Jones College Activities

What to Bring
Stuff you should bring:
Extra long twin bed sheets (84”—no matter how hard you try, normal twin sheets will not fit), pillows, covers and a
blanket.
Socks and underwear. Remember the more of these you have, the less you have to do laundry. Clothes can be recycled,
but underwear is a one-time use item.
Warm-weather clothing. You will not need multiple sweaters, bring a few and a light coat. Houston has a mild winter
but a very hot and humid summer/fall/spring.
A nice outfit or two.
Raingear. Seriously, it monsoons here sometimes. At least an umbrella, but you won’t
go wrong with waterproof shoes and a raincoat.
Toiletries- you know what you need.
A couple of towels, washcloths, and hand towels.
Computer. You can get by without one, and there are computer labs across campus you can use with Macs, PCs,
and Unix systems and there is one lab in the South Lobby of Jones, but if you can bring one it will make your life
a lot easier, as you will become addicted to checking your email and there is nothing worse than having to go out
at 3 a.m. to finish your paper.
Alarm clock.
Phone with Caller ID (Rice provides the Caller ID service).
Credit Card for emergencies.
Desk Lamp- for all those late nights when your roommate is sleeping.
Laundry supplies-like detergent, fabric softener, etc.
1 or 2 bizarre costumes. Anything from that 80s headband you forgot to throw away to that complete
Devo or Legolas costume you sewed yourself. Trust me, there will be occasions for them.
Stuff you could bring:
A mini-refrigerator, good for food and drink of all kinds....
-TV, VCR/DVD player, stereo, couch. Talk to your roommate about these items so you don’t have two of anything.
-Microwave safe bowls, cups, and plates (there are microwaves in the kitchens located on every floor.) Also, forks,
knives, and spoons.
Camera. As you can see by all the beautiful pictures throughout this book, you will have ample opportunity to use
it.
Sports gear. We have several fields and facilities nearby where you can play sports. Stay in shape and help us win all
our IM sports to win the President’s Cup again next year.
Stuff you should not bring:
Too much stuff—remember that your advisors can take you to get a lot of things
when you get here.
Microwaves. Every floor has one, and Housing & Dining will fine you if they
find out.
Non-Rice friends. They can come with your parents to drop you off, but after
that they are not permitted. You will be so busy during O-Week meeting new
people, and probably will want to sleep rather than hang out with old friends
when you have some free time.
