BEER BIKE

What is it?

There is a day when all the other colleges come together to celebrate Jones' winningness. A grueling test of speed, endurance, and gag reflex control comes on the heels of a week-long foray into bliss and happiness. The stuff of legends and a cornerstone of Rice life, Beer Bike is our day. At its core, Beer Bike is a relay race of ten bikers on three teams: men, women, and alumni. These bikers are joined by a team of ten chuggers, who stand on the famed Jones platform near the bike pit as each bikes come in and must chug water before the next biker can leave the pit. But Beer Bike is more than that. The entire week leading up to it, Willy Week, is a celebration of life at Jones and life at Rice. Jones will celebrate with parties and activities, such as Night Ride and water balloon filling contests. And we will also partake in the main phase of open intercollege jack season. Although you probably won't see or hear them, rest assured that somewhere out there, a Jones force is spreading mischief. The Beer Bike Race itself only comes after a morning of debauchery and one of the biggest water balloon fights in the world. Biking and chugging for Jones is an honor, one that all should attempt. Jones Fast Women and Hard Men are revered on campus for their skill on the bike.

Coke Cart

In the fiercest and most deadly battle of Floor Olympics, freshmen from each floor are offered up as tributes to battle for the honor of their floor. Chosen at a reaping alongside an upperclassman mentor, one freshman girl and one freshman boy must prepare themselves for the greatest challenge of their life. Additionally, one female and one male OC (off-campus) student are selected to be the careers of the battle. To show support for their tributes, floormates win points to purchase gifts by demonstrating their knowledge and creativity for the Hunger Games. You will not want to miss this epic war complete with swords (noodles), guns (water guns), and blood (red paint)!

Night Ride

Get ready for Night Ride, the thrilling start to Beer Bike Week that brings Jones together for a night of fun and high spirits! Jonesians paint up in vibrant green and purple, ready to embark on an unforgettable adventure. We pile into cars, crank up the music, and take to the inner loop, cheering and blasting tunes as our bikers bike alongside. Once we reach the bike track, the real fun begins. We introduce our chug team, bike team, and pit crew, hyping them up with cheers and chants for a mock Beer Bike race. The night culminates in a lively celebration with plenty of cheers and a pizza party. Night Ride is a vibrant, high-energy tradition that sets the tone for an amazing Beer Bike Week!

History

1957

Jones College was built as the first women's dormitory at Rice University. The building was made possible because of a $1 million donation from Houston philanthropist Jesse H. Jones. The college was named in honor of his wife, Mary Gibbs Jones. Jones College, which consisted of two buildings - Jones North and Jones South - opened to the first female residents in September 1957.In the early days, Jones College's culture was quite conservative since the college was all-female. The women were always expected to maintain 'ladylike' manners. At meals, each table had a hostess, and dinner was served family style. Strict rules were enforced by house mothers when men from the south colleges visited the female students. The students even had to abide by a strict curfew - 11 PM on weekdays and 2 AM on weekends.

1970

In the 1970s, Jones began phasing out many of the strictest rules, but some women were still unsatisfied with the college. In 1972, some Jones women took the opportunity to transfer to Baker and Hanszen, the first two co-ed colleges. 1972 was also the year of the first Women's Beer Bike Race. Jones lost Beer Bike to Brown that year, but it went on to win in 1975, 1978, 1979, and 1980.

1980

In 1981, Jones made its Beer Bike men's race debut by finishing second-to-last. The Jones men didn't make a mark in Beer Bike history until 1988 when they won their first ever men's race by just twenty-four hundredths of a second over Lovett. This victory sparked a glorious run of four men's race titles in six years (1988, 1989, 1992, and 1993). Jones men also captured Beer Bike titles in 1996, 2001, 2005, 2006, 2011, 2015, and 2017. Since Jones became co-ed, Jones women have won the women's race a total of four times - in 1990, 2002, and back-to-back titles in 2014 and 2015. The year 2015 marked the first time that both the Jones women's and men's teams won their race in the same year.

1981

In the fall of 1980, Jones made a major change that would alter life at the college forever - it went co-ed! Male students from the south colleges were given the chance to apply for transfer to Jones. Since Lovett went co-ed the same year as Jones, many of the new Jonesians were former Loveteers. Jones women who disagreed with the decision to go co-ed were allowed to transfer to Brown College, which remained all-female until 1987.
